Transition Roadshows For parents, carers and young people who are disabled or have special educational needs, age 14 and over.
Come and join us at one of our roadshows which provide an opportunity to meet and talk with practitioners across Education, Health and Care from Dorset Council and NHS Dorset who can help you and your young person plan for their adult life. The change from being a teenager to becoming an adult is often referred to in the world of disability as “transition”.

Arts University Bournemouth are really excited to be the headline sponsors for the inaugural Bournemouth Writing Festival (21 – 23 April 2023). There are so many fantastic events to get involved in as part of the festival and full details can be found online: www.bournemouthwritingfestival.co.uk
Lots of events are aimed at children, young people and families including creative writing workshops, a FREE sculpture trail and a fun filled reading event with Children's author, broadcaster and presenter Ali Sparkes. Ali will be leading an interactive reading of TWO books at this incredible event in aid of the Dorset Children's Foundation. Ali will be reading We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen as well as her own adventure book My Sister is a Dog. Plus, music from classical violinist Joan Martinez, and a few surprises, this event will get your kids excited about books!

Get ready for Local Offer Live! Local Offer Live takes place 15 to 26 May. It is a partnership involving Dorset Council, Dorset Parent Carer Council (DPCC) and NHS Dorset to promote and celebrate awareness and stimulate discussion about our special educational needs and disabilities local offer. There will be a programme of events for Dorset’s children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, their families and professionals who work with them. We will also be asking people to complete the SEND 2023 survey which will inform SEND strategy development for the partnership. The Albert Hunt Trust - Revenue grants up to £20,000 are available to registered charities based and working in the UK in the areas of hospice care, learning disability, mental health, the promotion of health and wellbeing, and homelessness. Applications can be made at any time.
The Benham Charitable Settlement - Grants, normally of under £2,000, are available to UK registered charities working in the UK and/or overseas for a diverse range of charitable causes, including support for the elderly, children and young people, the environment, church maintenance, the arts and sport. The Thompson Family Charitable Trust – Small and large grants, ranging from under £5,000 to over £1 million, are available to registered charities in England and Wales for a diverse range of charitable causes. Applications can be made at any time.
The De Brye Charitable Trust – Grants, generally for under £5,000, are available to UK registered charities working in the UK and/or (occasionally) overseas in the areas of disability, blindness. children, orphans, medicine, homelessness. social care, older people, the environment and wildlife. 3 Day SHARPS (Supporting Holistic Approaches – Risk, Parents and Self Harm) Training
The training objectives are to:
• Gain a wider knowledge, awareness and understanding of self-harm behaviours in young people.
• Understand the basic approaches for professionals communicating with families where the young person is self-harming
• Provide practical strategies for professionals in managing the emotional demand of working with young people who are harming themselves.
• Feel more competent/confident when working with young people who self-harm
The content of the training is based upon the work and evidence of the widely-respected FLASH parent programme, designed for parents of a young person who is exhibiting self-harming behaviour and whose behaviour is having an impact on the whole family.
The training is suitable for all healthcare professionals who consult with patients, those working in schools, social care, mental health facilities and community settings
Duration: 3 days
Time: 09.00 coffee, 09.15 start – 16.30 finish
Dates: 24th, 25th & 26th May 2023

Tragic Accident in Weymouth - Resources for supporting young people who may have been affected - A 15 year old girl, Roxy Phillips, died in a very tragic accident near Weymouth railway station in March. Partners have been making resources available to educational settings and other places which might find them useful for supporting young people who have been affected by this tragedy. The websites that have been shared are:
YoungMinds has lots of information for young people around coping with loss, including tips and advice for expressing grief.
Mosaic is a bereavement service for children and young people in Dorset.
Dorset Youth’s Mental Health Hub includes a library of resources on topics including mental health, bereavement, self-harm and drugs and alcohol.
Kooth is an online counselling platform for young people and has a host of resources about mental health including a live chat and forums.
EDAS/REACH offers a free, confidential, judgement-free drug and alcohol service for under 25s in Dorset.
Dorset Open Door offers bereavement support for people affected by a death which may be particularly traumatic or sudden.
Anna Freud Centre listen to and learn from children and young people, work with them to build better solutions, and amplify their voices to aid better understanding of mental health conditions.
Papyrus provide advice and support for young people who may be feeling suicidal, and resources for people who are supporting them.
IMPACTASUARUS – a free tool enabling small charities to measure their impact - Impactasaurus is a completely free service that helps small charities measure and report their social impact, which can improve their chances of attracting funding. The tool has a simple 4-step process that looks really easy to understand and use.
